Rival food retailers ASDA and Tesco are battling it out to anchor the £70m commercial element of Manchester’s Sports City leisure development.
ASDA is opting for an ambitious scheme for its food operation, believed to be around 13,935 sq m (150,000 sq ft), while Tesco is planning a more modest 9,290 sq m (100,000 sq ft) store.
The scheme is due to open in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2002, with the commercial aspect developed by AMEC Developments. The development already has outline consent.
One source said: “It’s a keenly fought contest, which comes down to the size of the development. No one knows who’s going to get it, but a decision is imminent.”
There are also plans for an athletics stadium, a major indoor water attraction, a family entertainment centre, an interactive educational sports centre, bars and restaurants.
