Asda buys East Kilbride site

Asda has bought a supermarket site for more than £27m adjacent to East Kilbride’s shopping centre in Scotland.

South Lanarkshire Council’s executive committee has accepted the supermarket giant’s bid to develop and operate 130,000 sq ft store on the 11-acre Kittoch Field site.

It is proposed that the council-owned site is leased to Asda for 175 years. Asda is now likely to submit a planning application to South Lanarkshire Council.

The development opportunity is understood to have attracted a number of bids from UK retailers.

Lisa Rooke, property communications manager for Asda in Scotland, said: “Asda is delighted to have been selected as the preferred bidder to expand East Kilbride’s shopping centre.

“We are looking forward to making progress in partnership with the council and the community.”
