Supermarket giant ASDA has signed a deal with PD Teesport, part of PD Ports, to develop a new £20m import centre at Teesport, near Middlesbrough.
ASDA said the deep sea container facility will help ease congestion in southern container ports like Felixstowe and Southampton and would provide it with its first international logistics operation in the northeast.
The building will initially comprise a 360,000 sq ft warehouse building on an 18 acre site. Construction starts this week with completion scheduled for February 2006.
A further 150,000 sq ft is planned on an additional 5.6 acres once the initial development is in operation.
ASDA has signed a 30-year lease on the land with an option to extend it for a further 20 years.
The warehouse will be developed by fellow Walmart subsidiary Gazeley.
