Asda is planning a new superstore and petrol station on the site of its existing outlet on the edge of Lincoln city centre.
The existing unit on Newark Road, North Hykeham, is more than 20 years old and backs onto the road. Asda wants to demolish it and bring the store entrance and petrol forecourt to face the main road. The chain has bought an extra 1.05sq m (2.6 acres) of land from a neighbouring school to make room for the £15m scheme.
The chain has now submitted plans to increase the size of the existing 6,000 sq m (64,585 sq ft) supermarket by 1,710 sq m (18,406.8 sq ft). The retailer has already met with North Kesteven councillors and planning officers to discuss the proposals.
Over the past four years Lincoln has been targeted by the superstores and now has a Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Safeway, Morrisons and Co-op superstore all trading on the edge of town.
However a spokesman for the council said no recommendation had yet been made and a date had not been set for the plans to be discussed.
