Ashfield hits back at CABE Swindon criticism

Ashfield Land, the developer behind a £100m regeneration project in Swindon, Wiltshire, has hit back at CABE for calling its scheme unimaginative.

A letter to the government watchdog, written by Ashfield’s planning adviser, Turley Associates, says: “This is one of the few regeneration projects in Swindon that is continuing under the challenging economic circumstances that continue to prevail.

“Under the current circumstances, and bearing in mind your position as a public voice of a government that is striving to deliver economic recovery, we would respectfully suggest that you be more circumspect in your comments, bearing in mind the potential for them to thwart substantial investment in much-needed urban regeneration.”

Ashfield said that CABE’s report on Regent Circus (pictured) included factual inaccuracies and that its comments were based solely on information provided by the borough council.

The developer said that the proposal for the former Swindon College site would “result in an extremely beneficial development and a huge improvement to the current situation”.

Last month, CABE urged Swindon council to reject the scheme, saying that the plans needed to be reconsidered “on every level”.
