Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley admitted his company had “probably” outgrown him at a Business, Innovation and Skills Committee hearing this week.
MPs were also told that staff were paid less than minimum wage for a “specific time” and HMRC had begun an investigation.
Ashley’s name was also dragged into the BHS hearings a day later, when former owner Dominic Chappell claimed that Ashley had been willing to buy the chain but was prevented from doing so when Sir Philip Green “went insane” and blocked the deal by sending the business into bankruptcy.
Ashley said: “I would have loved to have bought it. BHS is logical, it’s also logical we could have offered extreme value, Sports Direct upstairs and BHS downstairs.
“I’m not saying I’m a saint but we could have got synergies.”
He added: “Please don’t ask me any more questions or I’ll get shot.”
