The outline permission covers a 14-acre site on the north-eastern side of the town centre.

The scheme includes 300,000 sq ft of offices, a 10-screen cinema, bar and restaurant units, a 160-bed hotel, and 15,000 sq ft of shops and flats.

New landscaping, public realm and a multi-storey car park also form part of the plans.

David Deacon, development director at Ask, said: “We believe the development will be a huge step forward for the area and has the potential to become a catalyst for the transformation of the townscape of Bolton.”

The phased development will begin once land acquisitions have been completed.

A detailed application for the first phase is expected to be submitted next year.

The Careyjones-designed scheme is expected to take around 10 years to complete.
