Ask Developments has secured a compulsory purchase order for Urmston shopping centre in Greater Manchester, allowing its redevelopment of the town centre to go ahead.
Details of the CPO, which concluded before the Christmas break, are confidential. However, existing retailer Farmfoods has agreed to vacate its space at the site and closed its store last week.
Negotiations are ongoing for another existing retailer, InStore, to vacate its unit and are expected to conclude during the next three months.
Julie Moorhouse, development executive at Ask, said: “Our demolition schedule will progress further once vacant possession of the remaining units has been achieved.
“Work has already started on the site, with the temporary re-location of the library and the demolition of the former toilets, supermarket, library, pub and one of the stores.”
Ask’s scheme includes 140,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, including a 50,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s supermarket, 144 flats and a new library.
