A dilapidated office block that has blighted the Black Country skyline for years has been bought at auction, paving the way for a new £50m retail and leisure development.

Avenbury Properties paid £800,000 for the 85,880 sq ft Cavendish House in Dudley, West Midlands, when it went under the hammer at London auctioneer Allsop.

The seven-storey building sits on a 1.3-acre site in the town centre and will be demolished under Avenbury’s proposals. The commercial property developer plans to build a new shopping quarter, comprising a new supermarket, shops, restaurants and homes.

The Porter’s Field development will give the Black Country town a major regeneration boost.

The proposed project covers an area stretching between Trindle Road and King Street, and between Flood Street and Oakeywell Street. The scheme also aims to improve links between King Street and the rest of the town centre including High Street and market place.

The purchase of Cavendish House clears the way for the project to progress once planning consent has been granted from Dudley metropolitan borough council. Avenbury will work closely with planners to deliver the scheme.
