Average London rent only affordable for top 25%

Only the top 25% of earners in London are able to rent at an affordable rate.

According to data from the Office for National Statistics, rents in the capital are set at a level of more than 30% of income for more than three-quarters of households.

The ONS said it considered an area to have affordable private rent if tenants spend no more than 30% of their income on it.

In London, 38% of an average household’s income would be required to pay the average rent, while in the most affordable region, the East Midlands, the figure was 22%.
