The average monthly cost of renting privately is now £695, according to a survey by Experian.
Within the London commuter belt the average cost is £1,250, higher than in the capital itself where the number of smaller properties limited the average cost to £925.
The increased cost of renting means private renters are doing without holidays and are having to save for longer to afford a deposit on a house.
