Demolition of the 2,700-home Aylesbury Estate, in south-east London, has finally begun. The 40-year-old estate is seen as a symbol of urban dereliction and shattered political dreams.
Southwark Council said the commencement of demolition was “a milestone of social housing of national significance, both its physical size and the extent of change”. However, few have high hopes for the latest initiative which aims to build 4,000 homes over 15 years for £1.5bn.
