BAA announced that British Airways (BA) would vacate its homestead at Terminal 1, Heathrow, should construction of the controversial fifth terminal eventually go ahead. BA would be the sole occupant of terminal 5.
BAA expects the first phase of Terminal 5 to open in 2004. It expects to receive planning permission next year.
Virgin Airways chairman Richard Branson attacked the decision to hand over the proposed £1.2bn development to BA.
