Backlash delays Delancey’s Elephant & Castle plan

Delancey has requested a deferral until March for plans for its Elephant & Castle retail scheme after they met with a backlash from local people.

The developer requested the extra time at a Southwark Borough Council committee meeting last night. Borough planning officers had recommended the plans for approval.

Delancey wrote to the scheme’s opponents, saying: “We are now moving towards new proposals that seek to deliver one-third of the affordable housing at social rents (116 units to be managed by Southwark Council), provide more tangible relocation plans for all independent traders, and prioritise bingo in the short and long term.”

The developer added: “We recognise that concerns have been raised about our proposals and this extra time will give us the opportunity for these to be addressed.

“The issues are resolvable if all parties continue to engage in this positive and constructive manner. We will continue our work with Cathedrals and East Walworth ward councillors, Southwark Borough Council and other interested parties to reach a mutually acceptable and positive conclusion.”
