Bailey could lose peerage over Candy Covid party

Former London mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey could lose his peerage if fined over a Covid-era party attended by developer Nick Candy.

Bailey, who attended the event in December 2020 while London was in Tier 2 lockdown, was made a peer in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours.

The police have reopened an investigation into the event at the Conservative Party HQ, after a video emerged of staffers dancing past a sign that said “keep your distance”.

A photo of Bailey and staff standing in a close group, along with developer and Tory donor Nick Candy, had previously been made public.

Work and pensions secretary Mel Stride suggested Bailey and Ben Mallet, who was handed an OBE in Johnson’s resignation honours and who also attended the gathering, could have their honours looked at again.
