Balfour Beatty chairman Philip Aiken is understood to have been asked to lead a consortium planning a bid for National Grid’s £10bn gas pipes network.
The auction is likely to be the largest infrastructure deal in the UK this year.
There are two groups of bidders, and initial bids are due by the end of the month.
