Ballymore and Hammerson launch consultation for Bishopsgate Goodyard plans

Ballymore and Hammerson have launched a public consultation into new plans for Bishopsgate Goodsyard in Shoreditch, EC2.

Earlier proposals involved two controversial towers at the centre of the development, but these have since been scrapped.

The number of homes was also revised down, with only around 350 now planned instead of more than 1,350.

The developers have been working with FaulknerBrowns Architects, Buckley Gray Yeoman, Spacehub, and Chris Dyson Architects to update the proposals. The site has been derelict since a fire in the 1960s.

The new plans for The Goodsyard involve lower building heights. The aim is to increase the focus on workspace and the creative industries.

The proposals also include a new approach to routes and public spaces, including a pedestrian street connecting Brick Lane and Shoreditch High Street, lined with retail, affordable workspace and studios.

An elevated public park will include more active areas, with cafes and restaurants, and an extended walkway running across the site in high-line style.

Tony Coughlan, development manager at Hammerson, said: “We have been carefully considering the feedback on our planning applications and are now proposing an updated approach for the site, which allows for lower building heights and an increased emphasis on workspace to complement Shoreditch’s importance to London as a vibrant and dynamic hub for the tech and creative industries. We now look forward to hearing from local people about our revised approach.”

Nicola Zech-Behrens, senior development manager at Ballymore, said: “We have listened to what the local community has told us and, after constructive conversations with the teams at the Greater London Authority and the boroughs, are pleased to present updated proposals for this vitally important site in the heart of Shoreditch.”

A public exhibition will open on 8 November at Protein Studios, 31 New Inn Yard, EC2A, with a series of events over the following week.
