Bank of England backtracks on back to office plans

The Bank of England has abandoned a requirement for staff to go into the office at least one day a week.

In July, the bank said that from September all staff would be expected to work at least one day a week in the office.

However, last week the bank told staff that they would not be compelled to return to the office at all for the time being, although that situation is being kept under review.

The decision will put it on a potential collision course with the rhetoric coming from the government.

The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, said last month that video calling was no substitute for going in to the office.
