Barclays commits to branch cuts

Barclays has promised to close a quarter of its 1,600 UK branches as part of a five-year target.

It intends to replace some of the 400 units it closes with smaller sites in Asda superstores. Other UK banks are expected to follow suit in a bid to encourage more customers online. The co-operative Bank plans to cut its network by 15%. Lloyds Banking Group might consider closing branches from next year.
