Barclays has warned the growth of telephone and internet banking could lead it to shut more branches.
It closed a tenth of its outlets last Friday.
National Westminster has axed 1,374 since 1988 and Midlands, now HSBC, 468. Royal Bank of Scotland has stopped branch closure plans since its takeover of NatWest.
