Bargate revamp approved

Bargate-Southampton-THUMBSouthampton City Council has approved the redevelopment of the former Bargate Shopping Centre.

The proposals, designed by Corstorphine & Wright, aim to open up the historic Town Walls, and include plans for shops, restaurants, 152 one- and two bedroom apartments and 451 student beds.

Once fully occupied the residents and students are predicted to contribute £5m to the local economy.

James Burchell, partner of asset managers Tellon Capital, said: “This part of Southampton has been crying out for regeneration for a number of years. We are now able to realise the site’s potential through the delivery of a mixed-use scheme.”

Steven Frith, associate director at Corstorphine + Wright, said: “Celebrating the Bargate and the old Town Walls has always been a key design driver of this scheme.”
