Barker to highlight overprotection from development

Gordon Brown will publish a report by Kate Barker tomorrow that will say too much land is protected from development.

The Bank of England monetary policy committee member will say Britain has twice as much “protected” land as other industrial countries even though it has one of the highest population densities.

Her Treasury-commissioned report will urge ministers to re-examine whether too much land is protected from development and to ensure councils allow more projects.

The chancellor of the exchequer will respond to her report in Wednesday’s pre-Budget report. He will also give his response to Sir Rod Eddington’s report on long-term transport needs.
