Barnet House flats 40% smaller than Travelodge rooms

Plans for the development of Barnet House, used as offices by the London borough of Barnet’s housing department, show 96% of the 254 flats it will contain will be smaller than the national minimum space for a single person.

The smallest, at 16m², are 40% less than the size of the average room in a Travelodge. The homes have been described as rabbit hutches and dog kennels.

The developers do not have to follow minimum floor area criteria because of government deregulation designed to encourage the conversion of underused office space into homes.
