Barneys files for bankruptcy

Barneys, the luxury New York department store, filed for bankruptcy yesterday as its chief executive complained of a downturn in retail and “excessive” rent.

The company plans to close stores in Chicago, Las Vegas and Seattle, seven warehouse outlets and five smaller stores. This would leave it with five stores — including its Manhattan site, where the rent was increased recently to $28 million from $16 million — and two warehouse outlets.
