Barratt submits major mixed scheme proposal for Camden

Barratt has submitted a joint application to Camden Council for a major residential-led mixed-use scheme on a Morrisons supermarket and car park site. The scheme will provide 573 new homes, as well as the UK’s largest rooftop urban farm.

The plans involve the demolition of the current Morrisons supermarket and adjoining car park, a site that lies adjacent to Camden’s famous market and close to both Chalk Farm tube station and the Roundhouse. A new supermarket, along with other retail and around 125,000 sq ft of office space is also planned.

The scheme’s name, Camden Goods Yard, reflects the site’s historic role as railway sidings. In total, eight buildings will range from 5 to 14 storeys, with 35% affordable housing proposed, in line with current GLA planning guidance.

The urban farm is situated on the roof of an eight-storey building. The ‘sui generis’ use class will include space for a food and plant growing/production facility (including small-scale brewing and distilling) with associated ancillary office, storage, education, training, café and restaurant activities.

The operator for the community growing space is anticipated to be the Camden Chilli Farm operated by Something & Son. Planning documents reveal the 12,000 sq ft chilli farm “is envisaged as a place for workers, tourists and residents to escape the hustle and bustle of the city” and will provide a community offer and a programme of events throughout the year.

The proposals have been developed through collaboration between three architectural practices: Allies and Morrison, Piercy & Company and Niall McLaughlin Architects.

The housebuilder has an option to acquire the site once planning is obtained.
