The government’s green credentials are expected to come in for further criticism next week when Douglas Alexander, the transport secretary, reiterates support for a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
The Pre-Budget Report hinted strongly that the Department of Transport will maintain its recommendation for the project when it updates the air transport industry white paper this Thursday.
The Treasury said it supported airport expansion “including Heathrow” despite opposition to a third Heathrow runway from the environmental lobby and nearby residents.
