BBC confirms move to Mailbox

BBC Birmingham has confirmed that it is moving its Pebble Mill operation to The Mailbox scheme in the city centre. The Mailbox is set to be the new headquarters for BBC English Regions.

As tipped on EGi News in October, the BBC will occupy over 9,290 sq m (100,000 sq ft) on the first and second floors of the 10ha (25-acre), £150m mixed-use scheme, located near New Street Station. Around 600 staff will move to the scheme.

Network Production in Birmingham supplies BBC One, BBC Two, UKTV and Radios 2, 3, 4 and 5 Live, with the best-known programmes including The Archers, Doctors and Top Gear.

Andy Griffee, controller for English Regions and Head of Centre for BBC Birmingham, said: “I’m delighted that the BBC’s governors have given their support for this move. We’ve costed in great detail the options of refurbishing and staying at Pebble Mill or moving to The Mailbox. Over a 25-year timeframe, it makes sound business sense to relocate.”
