BBC’s Glasgow waterfront digital HQ gets go-ahead

Glasgow council has approved BBC Scotland’s planned 350,000 sq ft (32,515 sq m) digital broadcasting headquarters at Pacific Quay on the banks of the River Clyde.

Detailed plans for the HQ were submitted by the BBC in January.

The scheme, on the south bank of the River Clyde, will house around 1,200 staff and will include TV, radio and interactive TV production/broadcasting facilities.

David Chipperfield is the architect.

Alan Somerville of majority landowner Pacific Quay Developments – a joint venture between Miller Developments, Grosvenor and CTP – said: “This is a key milestone in the regeneration of Pacific Quay and ensures that the BBC remains in the heart of Glasgow.

“This approval, coupled with our recent deal with Scottish Television to relocate from Cowcaddens to Pacific Quay, drives forward our regeneration plans to turn Pacific Quay into a world-respected waterfront development.”

The BBC building will be situated adjacent to the planned 2 Pacific Quay building and the Glasgow Science Centre.

Work will also begin speculatively on the £15m second phase of the business park soon. It will include a 60,000 sq ft (5,574 sq m) office next to the BBC site.

One Pacific Quay is occupied by the Scottish Criminal Records Office.

The area also houses an IMAX cinema, the Glasgow Tower and the Science Mall.
