Advances in mobile technology could make as much as 30% of UK shopping space obsolete by 2020, according to Jones Lang LaSalle and retail researcher FSP.
A group of retail experts including JLL’s head of retail Guy Grainger, John Lewis Partnership head of retail development Jeremy Collins and Metric Property chief executive Andrew Jones debated the future of retail at the BCSC conference in Manchester today.
Grainger said: “Over the next ten years, the whole global retail landscape looks set to experience a period of continued change due to changing customer habits and needs.”
JLL said that the proportion of online sales would increase from just under 10% currently to in excess of 20% by 2020, leading to a rapid expansion of click-and-collect stores.
The agent said that retailers should look to maximise the “halo” effect of customers picking up online orders with additional purchases in store.
John Lewis said that it believed that click-and-collect spend translated into more 30% additional shop sales.
