Belfast partnership aims to redefine city

A new partnership of public, private and third-sector stakeholders has been launched with the aim of redefining the city of Belfast and attracting international investment.

Chaired by Joe O’Neill, chief executive of Belfast Harbour, the Belfast City & Region Place Partnership has been set up to drive the creation of spaces and places that sustainably boost employment, improve tourism and cultural infrastructure, deliver homes and support community and neighbourhood regeneration.

The initiative coincides with Belfast City Council embarking on the search for a seasoned, long-term partner to aid in delivering more than £500m of multi-site, residential-led, mixed-use developments across the city.

O’Neill said: “We’re already witnessing growing confidence in the Belfast region, exemplified by transformative projects such as the new Ulster University campus, the development of Belfast Grand Central, which is soon to be Ireland’s largest transport hub, and the wider Weavers Cross development; the groundbreaking £150m investment by Legal & General in new homes at Titanic Quarter, and the initiation of the first Belfast Region City Deal projects, including Belfast Stories, the redevelopment of Bangor Waterfront, the regeneration of Newry city centre and Studio Ulster.

“The recent NI Investment Summit, which saw more than 100 investors and businesses from around the globe descend upon Northern Ireland, coupled with US president Joe Biden and his economic envoy Joe Kennedy III pledging their commitment to peace and the pursuit of inclusive prosperity, underscores the wealth of opportunities that are within our grasp.”

Organisations involved in the Belfast City & Region Place Partnership include the Belfast Region City Deal authorities, Invest NI, Queen’s University Belfast, Arup, Belfast Harbour, Carson McDowell, ICW, Kainos, KPMG, Lacuna Developments, MRP, Silverwood, Titanic Quarter, Translink and Tughans.
