Bellway jv submits housing plans for Bedford RAF site

Plans for a housing-led development on a former airfield near Bedford have been submitted by Bellway Homes and Forthprice/Potton.

The proposals include over 1,000 houses across 72.55 acres (29.36ha), a local supermarket, pub, primary school and other community facilities on the 104-acre (42ha) RAF Cardington airfield.

The airfield was scheduled for closure in 1999, and was earmarked for a mixed-use development by the Bedford Borough Local Plan. Defence Estates put the site on the market in July of last year.

The development will retain existing buildings including the former Officers’ Mess and will also retain a disused railway line on the fringe of the site. The railway has been earmarked as a wildlife corridor.

Development Land & Planning Consultants is acting for the developers.
