Many private renters will be at risk from homelessness by 2020 if they cannot meet a £100-a-month shortfall between the cost of renting and housing benefit payments, the Fabian Society warns.
The rising cost of rented housing could be the greatest social challenge of the 2020s, the society’s general secretary, Andrew Harrop, says.
Housing benefit, received by 1.5m households, was frozen for four years in April.
