Berkeley Homes has signed up Nicholas Hytner’s The London Theatre Company at One Tower Bridge, SE1.

The theatre company will occupy a 900-seat venue, which is due to be built within the riverside development. It is London’s first new theatre for 20 years.

Alongside the theatre and homes, the One Tower Bridge will house retail outlets and restaurants in an effort to create a “destination” venue.

The theatre and the rest of the site is due for completion in 2017 and will be used for education and school’s initiatives in addition to the productions.

Tony Pidgley, chairman of Berkeley Group, said: “This is the next big step for the London Bridge area – London’s newest and most exciting theatre, run by a theatre director and a producer of real pedigree in Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr.

“After several false-starts, Berkeley is delighted to be able to deliver the world-class cultural facility envisioned by Southwark council. The London Theatre Company will have a strong beneficial impact upon the area, creating footfall, growth and jobs and consolidating Southwark’s status as a major cultural destination. Together with the cafés, shops and restaurants here, we can create the Covent Garden of the South Bank.”
