Berkeley profits jump 30%

Berkeley Group has reported annual pretax profits up 30% to £143.6m on turnover up 15% to £799m.

It announced plans to expand into the Midlands the north of England and the West Country, from its London and South East base. It has started developing a scheme in Swindon, Wiltshire. It ruled out taking part in consolidation in the housebuilding sector.

The company is negotiating with several National Health Service trusts to build residential accommodation for hospital workers who cannot afford central London house prices.
