Berkeley Group subsidiary St George has submitted plans for the redevelopment of the former News International headquarters in Wapping.
The London Dock scheme will transform the 15-acre former print works site into a major new residential-led mixed use development.
Designed by Patel Taylor, the proposals have been revised to take account of a Tower Hamlets council demand that the site host a new secondary school.
The final plans will include 1,800 homes and over 200,000 sq ft of commercial space, as well as the school, in buildings ranging in height from five to 33 storeys.
The Grade II listed Pennington Street Warehouse will be at the heart of the development and will be bought back to life with a mix of uses such as cafés, restaurants and small offices.
Heritage specialist Richard Griffiths Architects has prepared plans that revitalise the warehouse and link into the new development proposals.
The plans have been submitted as a hybrid application which includes detailed designs for the first phase of development, including a new civic square known as the Gauging Square.
St George will be holding a further exhibition in June for local people to view the proposals.
St George managing director Nick Hutchings said: “We are grateful for the very constructive and positive input we have had from local people and I believe we have an exceptional proposal for London Dock. Our plans will provide high-quality homes together with much-needed jobs and land for a new secondary school.”
The application is expected to be determined later this year, with the first phase of development commencing in 2014. The entire development is expected to take up to 15 years to complete.
