Berlin’s famous Checkpoint Charlie will be redeveloped amid concerns that the former Cold War frontier has become a “tacky tourist trap”.
The city’s authorities have bought two plots of land next to the border crossing point on Friedrichstrasse, with plans to build a museum and public square.
In addition, residential and commercial buildings will be developed in co-operation with a private investor. No further details have been made public.
The city previously blocked plans to build a complex of flats, offices, restaurants and a 380-bedroom “Hard Rock Hotel” at the site.
