The Better Renting for Britain campaign is calling on the next government to focus on build to rent as a way of increasing housing supply in the future.
A rental market based on the US model of individual companies with large portfolios of properties could improve the standard of accommodation and make the sector more professional, the group says in a letter.
The market could benefit from £30bn of investment, which could pay for more than 150,000 homes, it said.
