Southampton council is working on plans to develop 3.5m sq ft of offices, 1.4m sq ft of shops and more than 5,000 homes across the city.
The local authority has appointed urban planner David Lock Associates to prepare a masterplan to regenerate the city by 2026.
The regeneration will focus on a major, 133-acre development quarter, running from Southampton Central train station to the Royal Pier on the city’s waterfront.
Royal Pier is likely to be the first element of the plan to be put into action, with the council and landowners Associated British Ports and the Crown Estate this week relaunching their search for a developer to rejuvenate the pier.
Collapsed Scottish developer Kilmartin had entered into an 18-month exclusivity period with the council in September last year, and drew up plans for a £325m mixed-use project.
After the group was placed into administration earlier this year, the agreement passed to subsidiary Kilbride, which was not in administration. However, that agreement has now been terminated.
