Birmingham city council planners will next week rubber stamp proposals to adopt the Big City Plan as the council’s vision for future development.
Today (Monday 25 July), cabinet members will agree to the plan, which covers 2,000 acres across Birmingham’s city centre, being formally adopted as a strategic planning document.
The plan has been lined up by the city council to become one of the country’s first 11 enterprise zones, as revealed by Estates Gazette (2 April, p39).
The formal launch of the Birmingham city centre EZ is due to take place in August.
Key areas include the Southern Gateway, Westside, and Eastside – where the proposed High Speed 2 rail link and terminus will be sited.
The government’s recent decision not to include retail development as part of EZ status means that the makeover of New Street Station, which is to include a John Lewis department store, will no longer be included in the council’s EZ plans.
