The big-four supermarkets have had their best sales figures in over two years, led by an increase in sales of sparkling wines – up a third in the last four weeks according to Kantar Worldpanel.
Despite the improved performance, Tesco and the rest of the major supermarkets still lost market share – in Tesco’s case it edged down to 28.1% from 28.2%; sales were 0.2% lower, its best result since March 2014.
Discounters Aldi and Lidl recorded sales growth of 11.6% and 9.5%, taking their market shares to 6.2% and 4.6%, respectively.
