A bill for a referendum on European Union membership will be a key part of the Queen’s speech, due today.
Prime minister David Cameron is looking to fast-track the bill, enabling a vote to be held as early as next year. The bill could have its second reading early next month.
A British Bill of Rights will now be excluded from the Queen’s speech, although the government still plans such a bill during the course of the current parliament.
