Bingo and seaside gamblers bolster Rank’s fortunes

Bingo players and seaside gamblers have helped to offset a shortage of overseas high-rollers visiting Rank Group’s casinos in London.

The gambling operator yesterday hailed a series of trading “hotspots” outside the capital as it swung to a full-year profit from a loss in the previous 12 months. It also said trading had improved since a profit warning in June

The FTSE 250 company runs 52 Grosvenor casinos, 71 Mecca bingo halls and a smaller chain of Enracha venues in Spain.

It made a pretax profit of £74.3m in the year to 30 June, compared with a loss of £107.3m the year before. Revenue surged by 95% to £644m from £329.6m.
