Birmingham approves council house plans

Birmingham council has approved plans for 316 homes that will form part of the regeneration of the Lyndhurst Estate in Erdington, north east Birmingham.

The scheme had been mothballed due to a lack of funding. However, the council has won a £1m grant in Growing Places funding to help with infrastructure improvements for the estate. The grant must be paid back in full from the development’s proceeds.

Up to half of the homes will be owned by the council for rent, with the remainder for sale. A neighbourhood park and enhanced play facilities are also proposed.

Lyndhurst is a 1960s estate that originally had more than 700 council properties. The council has approved the clearance of all maisonettes and two high-rise blocks of flats on the estate to make way for family homes.

The remaining 337 council properties, including five tower blocks of flats and low-rise flats, houses and bungalows are being improved to the Decent Homes Standard.
