Birmingham City University scales down expansion plan

Birmingham City University has unveiled its proposals for a £60m campus expansion at Eastside.

The university has submitted a revised planning application to its original plans for which it had permission, but was then forced to abandon after the government announced plans for a High Speed 2 rail terminus at Eastside last year.

The new building has been designed by Associated Architects and significantly scaled back in size from 323,000 sq ft to 193,756 sq ft. It is understood that BCU is still in talks for further expansion space at Goodman’s Eastside Locks development nearby.

This first phase of expansion will house the university’s institute of art and design and will sit adjacent to the Millennium Point building, already home to BCU’s Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment and part of the Faculty of Performance, Media and English.

Work is due to start on site in August this year with completion expected in time for the 2013-14 academic year.
