Birmingham Mailbox – the £50m mixed-use development on the site of the former Royal Mail Sorting Office in the city centre – has got the final go-ahead and work is set to start in April 1999.
The scheme is intended for a 25-acre site with canal frontage. It has been awarded detailed planning permission by Birmingham city council’s planning committee and is expected to take 12 months to complete.
According to the developer, The Mailbox will be home to the largest residential scheme in the City. Crosby Homes is developing over 140 rooftop apartments as part of the development. The Royal Bank of Scotland is funding the development.
Former GVA Grimley partner and co-founder of Birmingham Mailbox Mark Billingham said: “Our plans for The Mailbox are centred around creating a vibrant and exciting new part of the Convention Quarter in the city. Its strategic location between New Street Station and the canal network allows The Mailbox to easily integrate into the City’s existing infrastructure and open up new pedestrian links.”
Mailbox is the first project undertaken by Birmingham Mailbox, which was formed in April by Billingham and former Brindleyplace director Alan Chatham.
