Birmingham plans 6,000 homes for Ladywood

Birmingham City Council is ramping up plans to deliver 6,000 homes at its largest-ever residential development in the city at Ladywood.

The council launched a hunt for a development partner earlier this year. It has now whittled the contenders down to a shortlist of four and appointed Avison Young to help it select a partner.

AY will help the council on masterplanning, land assembly and development viability.

The 150-acre Ladywood site, at the western edge of the city centre, currently contains around 1,000 homes located between Broad Street and Greater Icknield.

The 1960s estate is two-thirds owned by the council and has seen no investment in almost 30 years.

Birmingham City Council identified this as an area for redevelopment in its Big City Plan.

The council will partner with a developer to redevelop the existing estate and deliver an additional 5,000 homes, supported by local amenities and facilities.

Carl Potter, senior director at Avison Young, said: “Ladywood is located in a key area of the city – all of it within walking distance of such great landmarks as Brindleyplace, Symphony Hall and the Library of Birmingham – and could contribute so much more to a city with the ambition of Birmingham.

“Whilst a regeneration initiative of this magnitude takes time, there are some parcels within the area that could generate some early and significant change.”
