The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) won backing yesterday for a £60m expansion plan from Birmingham council. The council has a 50% stake in NEC, which is on the outskirts of the city. The centre will have four new halls added over the next 18 months. Floorspace will increase 20% to188,000 sq m (2,023,681 sq ft). The council wants it to grow to 200,000 sq m (2,152,853 sq ft) by 2003 to attract larger shows.
The NEC board is expected to give final approval next month so that construction can begin this spring.
