Birmingham ‘super stadium’ plans revisited

Birmingham City Football Club is to revisit dormant plans to create a new “super stadium” closer to the city centre, which could also stage the Commonwealth Games.

The football club has been asked by to revisit the plans as part of the FA’s proposed bid for the 2018 World Cup.

Birmingham FC’s plans to relocate were first revealed by Estates Gazette nearly four years ago (8 November 2004).

The original plans collapsed because the 50,000-seat stadium was closely linked with a new super casino and Birmingham failed to get on the government shortlist for possible locations.

The football club would anchor the new stadium, but it could also house other sports events and leisure facilities and be financially supported by retail or residential space.
