Birmingham City Council will propose selling off a number of its property assets in the city centre to drive forward its £600m Snow Hill masterplan proposals.

As part of the council’s review of its City Centre Chamberlain Building (CCCB) portfolio last year, reports filed ahead of a cabinet meeting on 28 June outlined plans for the council to work in partnership with the West Midlands police and crime commissioner to jointly sell four buildings along Corporation Street, which have a combined total of 68,250 sq ft.

These buildings are the King Edward Building, the Steelhouse Lane Police Station and the grade II listed Coleridge and Ruskin Chambers.

The council and the PCCWM want to retain the ground floor retail uses, but dispose of the upper floors of the partly vacant buildings for residential uses or student accommodation.

The report also recommended disposing of a further 27,324 sq ft via the grade II listed Pitman Building and Murdoch Chambers. These have also been earmarked for residential or student accommodation uses.

A decision will also be made this week on whether to appoint property advisers to market the buildings.

The portfolio comprises 10 buildings with total lettable floorspace of 300,000 sq ft.

The council launched its ambitious 20-year vision within the Snow Hill masterplan in February 2015. It was formally adopted last October. The Snow Hill masterplan will see an annual investment of £600m and bring forward 2.2m sq ft of new office space in the city.
