Birmingham City University sells 14.5-acre site to HCA

Birmingham City University has sold a 14.5 acre site in Birmingham to the Homes and Communities Agency for £6.1m.

The HCA will now submit a planning application in conjunction with Birmingham City Council and Birmingham City University for the site.

The site, on Aldridge Road, is part of the university’s City North Campus and was sold as part of its estate rationalisation process.

The deal allows the university to retain occupancy until late 2018, at which point its School of Education and Social Work will relocate to a £41m building under construction at the university’s City South Campus in Edgbaston.

GVA advised the university.

Carl Potter, senior director at GVA, said: “Birmingham City University will be provided with the confidence that their departure in late 2018 will not lead to an underutilised asset in one of the city’s main growth areas. The site represents a tremendous opportunity for redevelopment into a residential-focused scheme able to provide housing within the area.”
